May 15, 1864 — New Market, Virginia
As Ulysses S. Grant launches his grand offensive, Union General Franz Sigel drives up the Shenandoah Valley to strike at the Confederacy’s heart. Opposing him is John C. Breckinridge with a fragile force of veterans… and the teenage cadets of the Virginia Military Institute (VMI).
In a cold, driving rain, the armies clash at Bushong’s Hill. A gap tears open in the Confederate line. Breckinridge makes a desperate choice, “Put the boys in.”
The cadets charge across a mud-soaked field, many losing their shoes in the thick Virginia clay. Under relentless fire, they overrun the Union guns. The ground would forever be known as the Field of Lost Shoes.
Sigel’s army retreats. History is made.
In Battle of New Market, you command the decisions that changed the Valley.
