ART OF WAR
- Battle of Cowpens 1781
FULL GAME, with pre-cut counters: Cowpens 1781
As Brigadier General Daniel Morgan roamed South Carolina to forage and raise the morale of local patriots, British General Cornwallis saw this movement as a threat to his left flank. He sent Lieutenant Colonel Tarleton's cavalry, supported by loyalist troops, in pursuit of Morgan.
Morgan decided to take up a position at Hannah's Cowpens, a long hill surrounded by woods and swamps, in the hope that Tarleton would live up to his reputation for impetuosity.
On January 17, 1781, the American commander deployed his army in three main lines. After an exhausting march, Tarleton arrived on the field and immediately launched the assault. However, the American defense in depth absorbed the British attack, and counterattacked by totally overwhelming the British in the only double envelopment of the American War of Independence.
